Cori Coco Gauff breezed through the first round of the US Open. Last year’s champion defeated Varvara Gracheva (France) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:0) for a little more than an hour.
Varvara Gracheva played evenly only at the beginning, but after she allowed a break for 1:3, she seemed to wave the white flag. Before that, she missed several opportunities to win her rival’s serve. The second set was even easier for Cori Coco Gauff. The American had fun on the court and did not give a single game to the apathetic Varvara Gracheva.
In the next round, Cori Coco Gauff will face Tatjana Maria (Germany), who eliminated Solana Sierra (Argentina) after 2-0 (6:2, 6:3).
Donna Vekic, Paula Badosa, Taylor Townsend, Elise Mertens, Madison Keys, Marta Kostyuk, Emma Navarro and Barbora Krejcikova also secured a place in the second round.
Only the 9th-seeded Maria Sakkari, who withdrew against Wang Yafan (China), and the 32nd-seeded Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine), who lost by 1-2 (4:6, 7:6, 4:6) to Jule Niemeier (Germany), dropped out of the seeds.
