Qinwen Zheng advanced to the second round of the US Open

Paris 2024 Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng (China) advanced to the second round of the US Open. The seventh-seeded Chinese tennis player overcame Amanda Anisimova (USA), who participated with the “wild card” after a turnaround with 2-1 (4:6, 6:4, 6:2) in two hours and 18 minutes of play.

The Chinese tennis player, a quarterfinalist in New York from a year ago, won 73% of her first serve points and converted 6 of her 11 break points against Amanda Anisimova. The American led by 5:1 in the first set and won it, but in the second set, Qinwen Zheng made a key break in the fifth game and reached a successful 6:4. In the third set, she took a 3:0 lead and held on for the final 6:2 victory.

The next opponent of Qinwen Zheng will be Erika Andreeva (Russia), who prevailed over Yuan Yue (China) by 2-0 (6:3, 7:6).

The 12th-seeded Daria Kasatkina (Russia) advances after defeating Jaqueline Cristian (Romania) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4), while ninth-seeded Maria Sakkari (Greece) was forced to withdraw due to injury in the second set of her match versus Chinese tennis player Wang Yafan. In the second round, Wang Yafan will face Diane Parry (France), who eliminated another representative of China, Wang Xiyu, by 2-0 (7:6, 7:6).

The 27th-seeded Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) qualified for the next round. The semi-finalist from 2019 defeated Maria Lourdes Carle (Argentina) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 6:4). The match lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

The first round was also successfully overcome by Donna Vekic (Croatia), whois 24th-seeded and eliminated Kimberly Birrell (Australia) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4), while Jule Niemeier (Germany) defeated the 32nd-seeded Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine) after 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 6:4).
