Iga Swiatek and Barbora Krejcikova withdrew from the WTA 1000 Canadian Open

Iga Swiatek withdrew Rogers Cup

The world’s number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) and Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) are the latest to withdraw from next week’s WTA 1000 Canadian Open / Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto.

Iga Swiatek, who yesterday won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, withdrew due to exhaustion, while Barbora Krejcikova cited a thigh injury for her decision not to travel to Toronto.

“I regret to announce that due to fatigue from the last few weeks on court, I have to withdraw from the tournament in Toronto”, said five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. “Due to the intense schedule of the Olympics taking place this year and the changing surfaces, I need more time to rest and recover to be ready to play in the USA at my best possible level”, added she.

Barbora Krejcikova, who returned to the top 10 in the world rankings after her victory at Wimbledon last month, reached the quarter-finals of both the women’s singles and doubles in Paris.

“The last four weeks have been amazing. The busy schedule has taken a toll on my body and I need to prioritize my health so that I can continue to compete at my best. Thank you for your understanding and support and I look forward to returning soon on the court”, said Barbora Krejcikova.

World number four Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan), who has been suffering from acute bronchitis that has prevented her from representing her country Kazakhstan at the Olympics, will also miss the tournament in Toronto.

Jasmine Paolini, Maria Sakkari, Danielle Collins and Caroline Garcia are also among those who withdrew from the tournament.
