Yaroslava Mahuchikh broke one of the oldest records in athletics, improving the 37-year-old world record of Stefka Kostadinova in the high jump. The Ukrainian athlete, who is the world and European champion, jumped 210cm on her first attempt at the Paris Diamond League, thus winning the gold and improving the world record.
Before that, Yaroslava Mahuchikh set a new Ukrainian record of 207cm, which she managed on the second attempt. She also cleared 201cm and 203cm on her second attempt.
This winter’s world indoor champion Nicola Olyslagers (Australia) finished second with 201cm, while Serbian athlete Angelina Topic equaled Serbia’s personal and national record with 198cm for the bronze medal.
The former world record in the high jump of 209cm was set by Bulgarian athlete and Olympics champion Stefka Kostadinova at the Rome World Athletics Championships in 1987. Yaroslava Mahuchikh’s previous best was 206cm, but she already tried to improve the world’s record.
At the beginning of last month, Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the European title in Rome.
