Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund will play women doubles Paris 2024 Olympics tennis tournament

Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund

Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund will play women doubles for Germany in the tennis tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics, on the same courts where Laura Siegemund won the mixed doubles title at Roland Garros last month.

Both tennis players boast a combined six Grand Slam titles before heading into the Olympic competition from July 27 to August 4 in Paris. Angelique Kerber won the singles titles at the Australian Open and US Open in 2016, as well as at Wimbledon in 2018. She also has a silver Olympic medal from Rio 2016.

Laura Siegemund triumphed in doubles at the 2020 US Open in tandem with Vera Zvonareva, and also twice in mixed doubles. In 2016, with Mate Pavic in a team, she won the title in the USA, and this summer with Edouard Roger-Vasselin, she won Roland Garros.

“I was on the phone with Angie and she said she would like to play with me. She wants to play doubles if she has a chance to win a medal and really achieve something. And that was the best option for me”, said Laura Siegemund. She added that she would also like to play mixed doubles, preferring to be in tandem with Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Alexander Zverev. However, the German has not yet decided whether to play doubles or mixed doubles, but only specified that Angelique Kerber is not an option for him.

Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund have experience together since January, when they even won the United Cup title for their country. Laura Siegemund herself said that she really hopes that Alexander Zverev will decide in favor of their joint team, and she also emphasized to the German Tennis Federation that she “wants to play in any situation in mixed doubles and sees as plan B – Tim Pуtz”.

“I’ve only been told that there’s a good chance I’ll play in the mixed doubles, but nothing more. I’d like to be 100% confirmed. I think I deserve it with my performance, both in the United Cup and in Paris at the Grand slam”, concluded the German tennis player.
