Elena Curtoni won the women’s super-giant slalom in Cortina d’Ampezzo

Elena Curtoni

Italian Elena Curtoni won the women’s super-giant slalom in Cortina d’Ampezzo, valid for the Alpine Ski World Cup, but the race will be remembered for the heavy fall of the favorite Sofia Goggia, which calls into question her participation in next month’s Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The 30-year-old Elena Courtoni delighted the local audience in the Italian resort with the best time – 1:20.98 minutes and won the first victory of the season and the second in his career for the World Cup.

The top three were completed by Austria’s Tamara Tippler, who finished second 0.09 seconds behind the winner, and Michelle Gisin of Switzerland, 0.24 seconds behind Elena Curtoni.

The winner of the descent in Cortina d’Ampezzo yesterday, Sofia Goggia, fell hard and failed to finish the super-giant slalom. The Italian has twisted her knees but has yet to undergo examinations to determine whether she has suffered a serious injury that would prevent her from participating in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The other favorite of the local audience, Federica Brignone, finished fourth in the race and continues to lead in the ranking for the small World Cup in the super-giant slalom with 377 points. Elena Curtoni came in second with 348 points.

The leader in the general classification Mikaela Shiffrin drove cautiously and finished only 16th with a lag of 1.01 seconds behind the winner.

The route was difficult for most of the participants, as a total of 22 competitors failed to finish.

Mikaela Shiffrin remains at the top of the overall standings with 981 points, ahead of Petra Vlhova of Slovakia with 929 and Sofia Goggia of 769.

Cortina d’Ampezzo Women’s super-giant slalom Ranking:
1. Elena Curtoni (Italy) – 1:20.87 minutes
2. Tamara Tippler (Austria) – 1:21.07
3. Michelle Gisin (Switzerland) – 1:21.22
4. Federica Brignone (Italy) – 1:21.30
