The top-seeded and world’s number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) was knocked out at the WTA 1000 Miami Open. The Polish tennis player lost in the Round of 16 to the 14th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova by 0-2 (4:6, 2:6), thus ending her hopes of a “sunny double” (winning the titles in Indian Wells and Miami within a year).
Iga Swiatek was unable to reach a single break against her opponent and left the competition after an hour and 25 minutes of play.
“I just gave it my all on the court. I gave my best and I think I did pretty well”, said Ekaterina Alexandrova after the success, who achieved the biggest victory of her career.
The opponent of the Russian tennis player in the quarterfinals will be 5th-seeded (USA). The American eliminated her compatriot and 20th-seeded Emma Navarro by 2-0 (7:6, 6:3) in a match that lasted an hour and 29 minutes.
The former Miami Open champion Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) defeated Katie Boulter (Great Britain) by 2-0 (7:5, 6:1) and will face Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan) in the quarterfinals.
