Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out at the start of the WTA 500 San Diego Open

The wild card Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) was knocked out at the start of the WTA 500 San Diego Open after losing to Anna Blinkova (Russia) by 1-2 (6:1, 4:6, 1:6) in two hours of play.

The Danish tennis player started the match strongly, winning five games in a row with two breaks to close the first set at 6:1 in only 34 minutes. She also took a lead by 2:0, after an early break, in the second set, but Anna Blinkova equalized quickly and after exchange of breaks in the very end of the set. Thus, the Russian tennis player got a psychological advantage in the last set, which succeeded to to break three times the serve of Caroline Wozniacki and won the match.

In the next round, Anna Blinkova will face the 5th-seeded Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine), who defeated Caroline Dolehide (USA) by 2-1 (6:4, 5:7, 6:1).

The 7th-seeded Donna Vekic (Croatia) also qualified for the second round of the WTA 500 San Diego Open with a prize money of 922,573 USD after defeating Katherine Hui (USA) by 2-0 (7:5, 6:2) and will face the qualifier Marina Stakusic (Canada), who eliminated Marina Melnikova (Russia) after 2-1 (6:4, 5:7, 6:1).

Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) won her opening match versus Mai Hontama (Japan) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1), while Taylah Preston (Australia) eliminated Magdalena Frech (Poland) by 2-1 (6:4, 4:6, 6:1).

Leylah Fernandez (Canada) retired after feeling pain in the second set of her match versus Tatjana Maria (Germany) although won the first set by 7:6 after tiebreak.
