Iga Swiatek defeated Danielle Collins to advance to the third round of the Australian Open

Iga Swiatek AO

The women’s tennis world number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) went through the storm but managed to qualify for the third round of the Australian Open.

The Polish tennis player prevailed by 2-1 (6:4, 3:6, 6:4) over Danielle Collins (USA), after she overcame a two-break deficit in the decisive third set. The 30-year-old Danielle Collins, who played in the final in Melbourne two years ago, led 4:1 but Iga Swiatek showed great will to turn over the set and win the match.

In the third round, the winner of four Grand Slam titles Iga Swiatek will face Linda Noskova (Czech Republic), who eliminated Mccartney Kessler (USA) after 2-1 (6:3, 1:6, 6:4).

The 5th-seeded American tennis player Jessica Pegula was knocked out from the tournament after losing to Clara Burel (France) by 0-2 (4:6, 2:6). This is the biggest achievement for the French tennis player at the Australian Open. Clara Burel’s game was far from perfect, but the Frenchwoman received a huge help from Jessica Pegula. The American made only 9 winners for the entire match, at the expense of which she committed 31 unforced errors.

In the third round, Clara Burel will face her compatriot Oceane Dodin, who eliminated Martina Trevisan (Italy) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:4).

The day wasn’t a disaster for the American tennis players after all, as Sloane Stephens managed to find a place in the third round. The former US Open champion and semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2013 defeated the 14th-seeded Daria Kasatkina (Russia) 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:3). For a place in the Round of 16, Sloane Stephens will face with another Russian – Anna Kalinskaya, who defeated Arantxa Rus (The Netherlands) by 2-0 (6:1, 7:5).

Meanwhile, Jasmine Paolini (Italy) defeated Tatjana Maria (Germany) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3), while Qinwen Zheng (China) eliminated Katie Boulter (UK) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:3) and Emma Navarro (USA) turned over the match versus Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy) to win by 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:3).
