Kenyan long-distance runner Beatrice Chebet broke the 5km world record at the Barcelona road race. The 23-year-old covered the distance in 14:13.00 min, beating the previous women’s 5km record held by Ethiopian athlete Senbere Teferi by 16 seconds.
Beatrice Chebet also runs 6 seconds faster than the women’s world record set in a mixed event. Until now, this pinnacle was held by Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye from 2021.
Beatrice Chebet also won the world title in cross country in February, and last year she won the world gold in the 5 km in Riga. At the World Championships in Budapest, the Kenyan won bronze in the 5,000m.
Beatrice Chebet is a Kenyan long-distance runner. In 2022, she won the silver medal in the 5,000m at the World Championships, and became Commonwealth, African and Diamond League champion. Chebet claimed the gold medal for the women’s senior race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships.
She took the world under-20 title in the 5,000m in 2018 and at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships.
