The night slalom for the Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup, scheduled to take place at Austria’s Flachau Winter Center on January 11, will not take place because of COVID-19, the Austrian federation announced. From there they specified that they are looking for a new place to hold the competition. The slalom will be moved to Schladming. The date and time remain the same.
“Due to a large number of infected in Flachau, the province of Salzburg has spoken out against the competition”, wrote the Austrian federation. “A new venue is currently being sought”, adds the statement.
This is the first competition for the Alpine Ski World Cup to be moved or postponed this season due to the pandemic. In less than a month will be the start of the Beijing Olympics, which are to be held under very strict restrictions.
The Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) and the International Ski Federation (FIS) subsequently searched for an alternative venue and decided on Schladming, where the most prestigious men’s night slalom takes place every year on the steep slope of Planai.
Over the weekend of January 8 and 9, the skiers will perform in giant slalom and slalom in Kranjska Gora. The Slovenian organizers also had to look for an alternative venue, in Maribor it would not be possible to complete due to unfavorable snow conditions.
