Czech tennis player Karolina Muchova, a Roland Garros finalist this season and currently WTA No 8, announced that she will miss the high-profile tournament WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico, which starts on Sunday, due to a wrist injury.
“I am heartbroken to announce that I will miss my first WTA Finals in Cancun”, said Karolina Muchova. “Together with the team and doctors we tried everything till the last moments to resolve my wrist injury. Unfortunately, the time needed for the recovery is longer than we would’ve hoped for and therefore I had to make this unpleasant decision. I greatly appreciate the support of all the fans”, added she.
The Greek player Maria Sakkari, who is ninth in the WTA ranking and was the first reserve, will be the lucky loser and will take advantage of her absence.
Karolina Muchova injured her right wrist at the US Open in September, where she reached the semifinals.
“I will do my best to be back in 2024 and get another chance to be part of the WTA Finals”, added the Czech tennis player.
Karolina Muchova will also miss the finals of the “Billie Jean King” Cup, which will take place in Seville in November.
