Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) eliminated the 7th-seeded Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) in the second round of the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing. The Ukrainian tennis player defeated her higher ranked opponent by 2-0 (7:6, 6:1) in 78 minutes of play.
The match started perfectly for Ons Jabeur, who made an early break and took the initiative. She reached the the 10th game of the first set, when she was to serve for the set at 5:4 and even reached two set points, but surprisingly Marta Kostyuk saved them and after turning the game to deuce succeeded to take advantage and toe win it. Thus, the Ukrainian player equalized the score to 5:5. Both players exchanged one game to turn the set into a tiebreak, in which Marta Kostyuk took the leadership to 6-3 and after two failed setpoints finally won it.
Ons Jabeur definitely was shaken in the second set, although both exchanged a break in the very beginning. However, from the third game of the set on the court was only Marta Kostyuk, who achieved two more breaks and won the set by 6:1.
Thus, Marta Kostyuk qualified for the Round of 16, where will face Liudmila Samsonova (Russia), who eliminated the 12th-seeded Petra Kvitova (Czech republic) by 2-0 (6:4, 7:5).
The top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) took a straight-set victory versus Katie Boulter (UK) by 2-0 (7:5, 7:6), while the 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) had even harder match versus Anna Blinkova (Russia) but finally won by 2-1 (6:7, 6:2, 6:1).
The 9th-seeded Caroline Garcia (France) eliminated Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan) by 2-1 (6:3, 3:6, 6:3) and Xinyu Wang (China) eliminated the 11th-seeded Daria Kasatkina (Russia) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:2).
