The new outdoor 5,000m world record holder Gudaf Tsegay shared that the result she achieved at the Diamond League Final in Eugene (14:00.21 min) was not a surprise for her. The Ethiopian athlete improved by nearly 5 sec the world record of the Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, set earlier this year.
“I was very angry that I didn’t bring home two medals from the World Athletics Championships, but I knew that our training had a lot of potential. Even in conditions that weren’t perfect in Eugene, we thought I could do it”, said Gudaf Tsegay after the 5,000m world record.
Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She won the 5,000m gold at the 2022 Eugene and the 10,000m gold at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships, as well as the 1,500m gold at the 2022 Belgrade World Indoor Championships.
Gudaf Tsegay is also the world indoor record holder for the 1,500m, setting previously in this event world under-18 (current) and U20 (former) records.
