Sara Sorribes Tormo (Spain) became only the sixth female tennis player in history to win the WTA title as “lucky loser” after the 95th-ranked Spaniard defeated the 4th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:4, 6:4) to triumph at the WTA 250 Tennis in the Land in Cleveland.
Sara Sorribes Tormo is the sixth “lucky loser” in history, but three of those times have come in just the last two months. Maria Timofeeva triumphed in a similar way in Budapest, and Nao Hibino did it in Prague.
The final match at the WTA 250 Tennis in the Land in Cleveland lasted 2:27 hours as Sara Sorribes Tormo overcame a set deficit and a break, to take the victory in the next two sets and close the match.
“With each passing match I played better and better. The whole week is very positive for me and I am happy. I tried to always find the right solutions because Ekaterina Alexandrova has a very strong and dangerous shot. I will continue to work and throw all strength in every game, and the results will be there sooner or later. I just have to do what the coaches tell me”, said Sara Sorribes Tormo after the match.
