England reached the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after beating Colombia by 2-1 in front of nearly 76,000 spectators in Sydney. It will be England’s third consecutive World Cup semi-final, with the team facing hosts Australia on Wednesday.
The Colombians took the lead through Leicy Maria Santos Herrera in the 44th minute, but deep into stoppage time, Lauren Hemp equalized for the British by capitalizing on a mistake of the Colomabian goalkeeper Catalina Perez Jaramillo.
In the second half, the European champions made a complete turnaround as Alessia Russo scored a second goal, beating an opponent and heading the ball with clinical accuracy into the bottom right corner. The Colombians didn’t go down without a fight, but a fine shot by Lorena Bedoya Durango was saved by a fingertip save by goalkeeper Mary Earps.
England is the European champion in 2022 and one of the favorites for winning the world title this year.
