Iga Swiatek qualified for the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open

The leader in the women’s world ranking Iga Swiatek (Poland) qualified for the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open with a prize pool of 2,788,468 USD. The Polish tennis player defeated Danielle Collins (USA) by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:2) in a match that lasted 2:23 hours. Her opponent in the semifanal will be another American, the 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula.

The Polish tennis player, who has been at the top of the rankings for 72 weeks, lost the second set despite leading 2:0, but allowed a turnaround to 2:3. In the third set, however, Iga Siwatek pulled ahead with 3:1 and kept her lead for a successful 6:2 at the end.

“I really wanted to play hard and I’m happy that I was able to do that especially in the third set. Today I felt that I had to impose even greater intensity”, said Iga Siwatek.

Her opponent in the semifanal will be another American, the 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula.

Jessica Pegula secured a place in the top 4 of the tournament after defeating her compatriot and doubles partner Cori Coco Gauff by 2-1 (6:2, 5:7, 7:5) after 2:24 hours of play.

“It’s always difficult to play with your doubles partner. The key was who would do better”, said 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula.

In the other semi-final at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open, the 3rd-seeded Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) will face Liudmila Samsonova (Russia).

Elena Rybakina eliminated Daria Kasatkina (Russia) in the quarterfinals after a comeback by 2-1 (5:7, 7:5, 7:6). Liudmila Samsonova, who in the third round overcame 2nd-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) by 2-1 (7:6, 4:6, 6:3) after the match was postponed until Friday due to rain and later eliminated Belinda Bencic (Switzerland) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:4).
