Paula Badosa

Paula Badosa is a Spanish professional tennis player, who has been ranked as high as world No 2 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which she achieved on April 25, 2022. She has won three career WTA Tour singles titles and produced her best performance at a Grand Slam tournament by reaching the quarterfinals of the 2021 French Open. Later that year, she won the Indian Wells Masters, a WTA 1000 tournament, and her biggest career title to date.

Paula Badosa Gibert was born on November 15, 1997, in Manhattan, New York, USA, to Spanish parents. When she was seven, Badosa and her family moved to Barcelona. She then started playing tennis. As a junior, she won the title at the French Open / Roland Garros in 2015 and was the runner-up at the JB1 Klosters \ European Junior Championships in 2014. Paula Badosa also reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Wimbledon and French Open / Roland Garros in 2014.

Paula Badosa made her professional debut in 2012 at the $10,000 Vallduxo (Spain).

In 2013, she won her first ITF trophy at the $10,000 Sant Jordi (Spain), but during the season, despite being quite young, she reached the semi-finals of the $10,000 Benicarlo (Spain) and $10,000 Monzon (Spain).

During the next season, Paula Badosa turned mostly to the junior tour, but also played in several ITF tournaments and reached the final at the $25,000 Victoria / XI Copa Cd. Victoria (Mexico).

In 2015, Paula Badosa received a wildcard for the main draw at the WTA 1000 Miami Open, reaching the third round. Later, she reached the main draw of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open through qualifying but lost in the first round. She continue playing the ITF tour and won the titles at the $25,000 W25 Denain (France). By the end of the season, Paula Badosa played also at the WTA 250 Hana Bank Korea Open but again failed to cross the first round.

Paula Badosa continue playing in both ITF and WTA tours in 2016. She played at the WTA 1000 Miami Open, the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, as well as the WTA 250 Mallorca Open but this time lost in the first round. She was the runner-up at the $25,000 W25 Jackson, MS (USA), and reached the semi-finals of the $25,000 W25 Grado (Italy) and $25,000 Torun (Poland).

During the next two seasons, Paula Badosa won the title at the $25,000 W25 El Espinar (Spain), $25,000 W25 Glasgow (UK), $60,000 W60 Les Franqueses del Valles (Spain), and $60,000 W60+H Valencia (Spain), and was the runner-up at the $25,000 W25 Caserta (Italy) and $25,000 Oslo (Norway). She also reached the third round of the WTA 250 Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem.

In 2019, Paula Badosa played in the ITF and WTA Tours. She won the title at the $25,000 W25 Makinohara (Japan) and was the runner-up at the $60,000 W60 Burnie (Australia), $60,000 W60 Les Franqueses del Valles (Spain), $25,000 W25 Essen (Germany), and $25,000 W25 Hamamatsu (Japan). She also reached the semi-finals at the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open and WTA 125 Liqui Moly Open Karlsruhe, as well as the quarter-finals at the WTA 250 Hana Bank Korea Open. Following her good results, she first time entered in Top 100 and ended the season as the world’s No 97.

Paula Badosa made a good but very short season in 2020, which was seriously disturbed by the coronavirus pandemic. She reached the second round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals at the $60,000 W60 Burnie (Australia). Paula Badosa reached the semi-finals at the WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul, before making a real breakthrough at the French Open / Roland Garros, reaching the fourth round. She ended the season as the world’s No 70.

In 2021, Paula Badosa made her breakthrough in women’s tennis. She started the season at the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open, reaching the third round. At the Australian Open, she lost in the first round but achieved the semi-finals at the WTA 250 Open 6eme Sens – Metropole de Lyon. Paula Badosa reached the semi-finals at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open and WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. Later during the season, she won her first WTA title at the WTA 250 Serbia Ladies Open. During the summer, she reached the quarter-finals at the French Open / Roland Garros, the fourth round at Wimbledon, and the quarter-finals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open, she reached the quarter-finals and a few weeks later won her most prestigious title – WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open. She finished the season, taking part in the Year End Championships Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara, reaching the semi-finals. Thus, Paula Badosa ended the season as the world’s No 8.

In 2022, she started perfectly, reaching the semi-finals at the WTA 500 Sydney Tennis Classic, as well as the fourth round of the Australian Open. Paula Badosa reached the semi-finals at the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and the quarter-finals at the WTA 1000 Miami Open. She reached the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros, the fourth round of Wimbledon, and the semi-finals at the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. Despite unsatisfactory results, however, she kept her position and reached the world’s No 2.

Paula Badosa reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Adelaide International 2 in 2023 but did not continue the season at a high pace. Despite losing in the first or second rounds in Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, and Miami, she reached the quarter-finals at the WTA 500 tournaments Credit One Charleston Open and Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, as well as the Masters tournament Rome Open. After suffering an injury at the Wimbledon, she ended the season earlier already in June.
