Danielle Collins continues her winning series and defeated sixth-seeded Simona Halep in the second round of the WTA 100o Rogers Cup (Canadian Open). The match lasted almost three hours and was won by the American with 2-1 (2:6, 6:4, 6:4), who is unbeatable for 12 consecutive matches.
Simona Halep returned at the WTA 1000 Rogers Cup from a three-month injury. Romanian player, who won the Canadian titles in 2016 and 2018, saved four match points in the final game of the epic match.
The first set did not hint at such a drama after Simona Halep won it relatively easily with 6:2 after making two breaks in the fifth and seventh games.
The second set, however, was full of turns and breaks. Simona Halep and Danielle Collins exchanged breaks in the very beginning to keep the result draw – 2:2. The American took a lead in the sixth game but failed to defend it and Simona Halep returned the break, making the result 3:4. When the Romanian was serving to equalize the games, however, received a break and gave a chance to Danielle Collins to serve for the set. And there was a new break, made by Simona Halep, which kept her in the set. However, the 10th game at the service of Simona Halpe was won by Danielle Collins on zero, which brought her the set at 6:4.
The third set was also as dramatic as the second one. Both players exchanged one service game and then one break to make the result 2:2. Simona Halep took a lead in the fifth game after a break but failed to defend it and Danielle Collins returned the break. The result went 3:3. Both players won their next service games and the match was running equal, but in the 10th game, which was at the service of Simona Halep, the big drama came. The result was 5:4 for Danielle Collins and she lost four match points and the game crossed through six deuces before the American won it and also the match with 2-1.
Danielle Collins will play versus Jessica Pegula, who eliminated tenth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with 2-1 (1:6, 6:3, 6:2), in the third round of the WTA 1000 Rogers Cup.
Danielle Collins has 12 consecutive wins. She won her maiden major WTA trophy at the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open (in mid-July) and the WTA 500 Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose. Since then she keeps her winning series and aims to improve it at the WTA 1000 Rogers Cup.
In other matches from the second round, Ons Jabeur eliminated Daria Kasatkina with 2-1 (2:6, 6:3, 6:4) and will face second-seeded Bianca Vanessa Andreescu in the next round.
Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka also qualified for the third round after defeating the 2018 finalist Sloane Stephens with 2-1 (7:6, 4:6, 6:4) and will play versus Canadian Rebecca Marino, who eliminated Paula Badosa with 2-1 (1:6, 7:5, 6:4).
