Polish athlete Pia Skrzyszowska

Pia Skrzyszowska is a Polish athlete, specializing in sprints and hurdles. She is a European champion, World Indoor Championships bronze medalist, as well as multiple national champion. Her personal best is 12.42sec in 100m hurdles and 7.78sec in 60m hurdles.

Pia Skrzyszowska was born on April 20, 2001, in Warsaw, Poland, in a family of Olympic athletes. Her mother is a former Olympic long jumper and 1988 European Indoor Championship bronze medalist. This formed the way of Pia Skrzyszowska, who started in athletics as a kid. Initially, she started in sprints and long jump but later turned to hurdles.

Pia Skrzyszowska started her competitive career in 2016, winning the gold at the Warszawa U16 Indoor Meeting in the 60m and long jump. During the season, she also earned several more honors in the long jump.

In 2017, Pia Skrzyszowska won her first national junior medal, winning the long jump gold at the Torun Polish U18 Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, she won the long jump and 100m hurdles gold medals at the Warszawa Polish U18 Championships. Pia Skrzyszowska competed at the Gyor 14th European Youth Olympic Festival in the 4x100m relay, finishing 6th in the final. In the same championship, she competed in 100m hurdles but did not overcome the heats.

Pia Skrzyszowska won her first senior national honor in 2018, winning the long jump bronze at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships. Meanwhile, she also competed in sprints and hurdles, winning the 60m gold at the Torun Polish U18 Indoor Championships, as well as 100m and 200m gold medals at the Chorzow Polish U18 Championships. She finished 6th in the 4x100m relay at the Tampere IAAF World U20 Championships, 8th in 200m at the Gyor European U18 Championships, and 6th in 200m at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games. During the season, she won the 200m gold at the Siedlce Henryk Gut Memorial and Warszawa Akademickie Mistrzostwa, as well as the 100m hurdles gold at the Schwechat Franz Schuster Memorial.

In 2019, Pia Skrzyszowska won her first international junior honor, triumphing with the 100m hurdles silver at the Boras European U20 Championships. In the same championships, she finished 6th in the 4x100m relay. Meanwhile, she proved to be one of the most talented athletes in Poland, winning the 60m and 60m hurdles gold at the Torun Polish U20 Indoor Championships, as well as the 100m hurdles gold at the Raciborz Polish U20 Championships. She finished 6th at the prestigious ORLEN Memorial Janusza Kusocinskiego in 100m hurdles and Lodz Orlen Cup in 60m hurdles.

In 2020, Pia Skrzyszowska won the 100m silver at the Wloclawek Polish Championships but specialized in hurdles, where she won the 60m hurdles silver at the Lodz Orlen Cup, 100m hurdles bronze at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, as well as 100m hurdles gold at the Lodz Polish University Championships and Karpacz CZE-POL U20 Match. Meanwhile, in sprints, she won the 60m gold at the Torun Polish U20 Indoor Championships and the 100m gold at the Radom Polish U20 Championships.

Pia Skrzyszowska made he Olympics debut in 2021, being part of the Polish team to compete in the 4x100m relay and competing individually in 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Unfortunately, in the 4x100m relay, the team did not overcome the heats, while individually in 100m hurdles she finished 6th in the semi-finals and did not qualify for the final. Meanwhile, during the season, Pia Skrzyszowska won her first national titles in 100m hurdles and 100m at the Poznan Polish Championships but also earned the silver at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships in 60m hurdles. She finished 5h at the Torun European Athletics Indoor Championships in 60m hurdles but won the 100m hurdles gold at the Tallinn European Athletics U23 Championships. Pia Skrzyszowska won the 100m and 100m hurdles gold at the Chorzow European Athletics Team Championships Super League, but also made her Diamond league debut at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Firenze, finishing 6th. She had a fantastic season, winning also 100m hurdles silver at the FBK Games in
Hengelo and 67° ORLEN Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, as well as 4x100m relay silver at the Chorzow World Athletics Relays.

In 2022, Pia Skrzyszowska became a triple Polish national champion, winning the 100m hurdles gold at the Suwalki Polish Championships, but also earned the 60m silver at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships. She became the European champion in 100m hurdles, winning the gold at the Munich European Athletics Championships, where also won the silver in the 4x100m relay. She competed also at the Eugene World Athletics Championships in 100m hurdles but did not reach the final. However, in 100m hurdles, she won the gold at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix, the silver at the 68° ORLEN Janusz Kusocinski Memorial and XXXV Meeting Citta di Padova, as well as the bronze at the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona. Earlier, she competed at the Beograd World Athletics Indoor Championships in 60m, but did not reach the finals. Meanwhile, in 60m, she won the bronze at the ORLEN Copernicus Cup and silver at the ISTAF Indoor Dusseldorf.

Pia Skrzyszowska started the 2023 indoor season strongly, winning the 60m hurdles gold at the ISTAF INDOOR Dusseldorf, ORLEN Cup Lodz 2023, and ORLEN Copernicus Cup (with a meeting record). During the outdoor season, she won her first Diamond League honor, winning the 100m hurdles bronze at the Stockholm BAUHAUS-Galan, and triumphed again with the title at the Gorzow Wielkopolski Polish Championships. In 100m hurdles, she won the gold at the Poznan Czeslaw Cybulski Memorial and Chorzow European Athletics Team Championships First Division, as well as the bronze at the Bern CITIUS Meeting. She competed at the Budapest World Athletics Championships, finishing 5th in the 4x100m relay, but did not overcome the semi-finals in 100m hurdles.

Pia Skrzyszowska won her first world honor in 2024, finishing 3rd in 60m hurdles at the Glasgow World Athletics Indoor Championships. Meanwhile, she won another national title at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships. Meanwhile, during the indoor season, she won the 60m gold at the Orlen Cup Lodz and Ostrava Czech Indoor Gala, as well as the silver at the Torun ORLEN Copernicus Cup and the bronze at the World Indoor Tour Gold Madrid 2024. During the outdoor season, she kept the pace, winning the 100m hurdles gold and 100m silver at the Bydgoszcz Polish Championships, as well as the 100m hurdles silver at the 63rd Ostrava Golden Spike and 100m hurdles bronze at the Diamond League’s Seashore Group Doha Meeting. At the Roma European Athletics Championships, she earned the bronze in 100m hurdles, setting a personal best of 12.42sec.
