Italy can now boast two European titles at the Continental Athletics Championships in Rome. After Antonella Palmisano prevailed in the 20km sport walk earlier today, Nadia Battocletti also brought great joy to the hosts in the women’s 5,000m run. The 24-year-old Italian established herself with a new championship record of 14:35.29 min after attacking on the last lap to the thunderous applause of her compatriots at the Stadio Olimpico. It was the first women’s European title for Nadia Battocletti. So far she has had one European gold in the girls’ under-23 5,000m since 2021.
Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal (Norway), who led the race from the start, surrendered before the final sprint to Nadia Battocletti and won the silver with 14:38.62 min.
The Spanish athlete Marta Garcia set a new national record of 14:44.04 min for the third place.
The Top 5 was completed by Maureen Koster (Netherlands) and Nathalie Blomqvist (Finland) with 14:44.46 min and 14:44.72 min, respectively.
