Laura Muir will captain Team Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest

Olympic silver medalist Laura Muir will captain Team Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, which start on Saturday and run until August 27. The Scottish athlete, who finished second in the 1,500m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, earned bronze in the same distance at the 2022 Oregon World athletics Championships.

Laura Muir, 30, also won her fifth European indoor title in Istanbul this winter.

“It’s been a decade since my first world championship, which was in Moscow. I learned many lessons during that time. In my speech as captain, I tried to convey these experiences and lessons from traveling in the sport throughout my career. We hope that they will be useful for the younger and new athletes on the team, but also for those who are more experienced”, said Laura Muir.

Laura Muir is a Scottish middle- and long-distance runner. She is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist in the 1500 metres, having previously finished seventh in the event at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Laura Muir won the bronze medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, and has three other top five placings in 1,500m finals at the World Athletics Championships, finishing fifth in 2015, fourth in 2017 (where she was also sixth in the 5,000m) and fifth in 2019. She is a two-time European 1,500m champion from 2018 and 2022 as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games 1,500m champion and 800m bronze medalist.
