Jessica Pegula won the title of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open

The American tennis player Jessica Pegula won the title of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open tennis tournament with a prize pool of 2,788,468 USD.

In the final, 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula defeated Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:0) in just 49 minutes and five breaks in total, sending a clear message to her rivals ahead of the US Open.

The title is the first for the American tennis player for the season and second of the WTA 1000 series, while Liudmila Samsonova was due to enter the final clash hours after her semi-final match against Elena Rybakina was postponed due to rain.

“It’s tough and it feels bad that we couldn’t play in fairer conditions”, said Jessica Pegula, who had more time to rest before the trophy match.

She won 100% of her first serve points against Liudmila Samsonova, who did not get to a single break point.

“She had two great wins over top 10 players who are among the best in the world. For me she is a top 10 competitor and I hope she gets there and does well. Hugs to her. The situation shouldn’t have been like this, but I guess that happens sometimes”, said Jessica Pegula.

She became the first American to win the tournament in Montreal in a decade, since Serena Williams’ title in 2013.
