Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari advanced to the third round of the Australian Open

The top-seeded and world’s number one Iga Swiatek qualified for the third round of the Australian Open after beating Colombian tennis player Maria Camila Osorio Serrano by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) in one hour and 25 minutes.

The Polish player made as many as four breaks in the first set, but conceded two for the final 6:2. In the second set, both improved their service game, but even so, Iga Swiatek made two breaks and led 5:1. Maria Camila Osorio Serrano then broke back to cut to 5:3, but her opponent closed out the match on her next serve.

The 6th-seeded Maria Sakkari also advanced to the third round of the Australian Open 2023, defeating qualifier Diana Shnaider from Russia by 2-1 (3:6, 7:5, 6:3). The match lasted more than 2:30 hours. Diana Shnaider, who is ranked 106th in the WTA, won the first set after breaking the Greek’s serve in the second game for a 3:0 lead before holding on. In the second set, both exchanged several breaks, but Maria Sakkari still managed to make three, winning 7:5 and equalizing the score. She managed to keep the momentum going in the fourth set as well and pulled out the match.

The third-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) qualified for the third round after defeating the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich by 2-0 (6:2, 7:6) in a little over an hour and a half. The American was convincing at the start of the match and gave the impression that the match will be very easy for her. The second set was much more dramatic, with Aliaksandra Sasnovich leading 6:5, but in the end, it came to a tiebreak and Jessica Pegula prevailed by 7-5.

The Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina managed to defeat the 15th-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova by 2-0 (7:5, 6:4) after exactly two hours of play.
