Germany made a 1-1 draw with South Korea and leaves the FIFA Women’s World Cup

Germany failed to beat outsiders South Korea and finished 1-1 in the last match between the two teams in Group H at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. With today’s failure, the Bundesteam was already eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup, after Morocco beat Colombia by 1-0 in the other match. Thus, Germany suffered a serious failure in the FIFA Women’s World Cup and did not pass the groups.

The match started very badly for the Germans, as South Korean team scored a goal in the 6th minute. After a misunderstanding in the German defense, Cho So-hyun received an excellent lead pass and, staying face to face with Merle Frohms, had no problems soring for 1-0. Germany’s line-up looked confused and the Asian women continued their good play, with Ji So-yun hitting a dangerous long-range shot in the 37th minute. However, the Germans managed to equalize in the 42nd minute through Alexandra Popp, who headed in Svenja Huth’s cross from the right.

The second half started with strong German pressure. In the 57th minute, a goal for the Bundesliga was disallowed due to an offside. In the 71st minute, South Korea missed a great opportunity after a corner by Ji So-yun. Towards the end of the match, Germany tried a desperate push, with Sydney Lohmann’s shots going wide of the Korean goal. However, the Bundesteam was never able to overcome the valiantly fighting Asian women even with the huge overtime and so the match ended in a draw, which formalized the elimination of the German women already in the groups, being the first for them in their history at the women’s world championships.

Thus, Germany ended its participation, and the World Cup continues to bring big surprises, after the teams of Brazil, Italy and Argentina have already been knocked out of the tournament. South Korea finished bottom of Group H, but leave the FIFA Women’s World Cup with their heads held high.
