Favorite Katarina Johnson-Thompson leaves the heptathlon competition due to injury

The current world champion in heptathlon Katarina Johnson-Thompson surprisingly ended her participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics today. She collapsed on the track during the 200-meter race after she was found to have suffered an Achilles tendon injury. The Briton won her hurdles series and then reached 1.86 meters in the high jump before facing the start for her fourth race. But she collapsed to the ground and grabbed her right ankle as volunteers offered her a wheelchair to get her off the track.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson waved at them, boldly getting to her feet, and headed for the finish line as the few spectators around the track applauded.

The Dutch heptathlete Anouk Vetter leads after the first day of the competition, while Belgian Noor Vidts is in 2nd place. The third position at the moment is for defending his Rio 2016 title Nafissatou Thiam.

The heptathlon competitions continue on Thursday when the first test of the day will be the long jump.
