Emma Raducanu hopes to recover in time for the Australian Open

British tennis player Emma Raducanu remains a doubt for the Australian Open but hopes to be able to recover in time for next week’s Grand Slam tournament.

The former US Open champion said her condition following the ankle injury she suffered in Auckland is being assessed day by day. Emma Raducanu sprained her ankle during a second-round match at the New Zealand tournament against Viktoria Kuzmova.

“The last week has been very miserable. I felt great at the start of the season and I was happy with the physical training I did. Then this incident happened on the court. I don’t know what I could have done to prevent it. Now we’re monitoring my condition day by day, I’m trying to progress, so we’ll see what happens”, said Emma Raducanu in an interview. “Hopefully by Monday or when the tournament starts for me, I’ll be good and ready.” But I’m still trying not to set high expectations at this stage”, added the 20-year-old tennis player.

The Australian Open will start on January 16. Emma Raducanu made her debut in the competition last year, crashing out in the second round after losing to Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic. The Briton will not be placed in the competition scheme as she is ranked 75th.
