Dutch athlete Emma Oosterwegel

Emma Oosterwegel is a Dutch track and field athlete competing in the combined events. She won the bronze in the heptathlon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is a four-time Dutch national champion.

Emma Oosterwegel was born on June 29, 1998, in Deventer, Netherlands. She started in athletics as a child and initially practiced sprint, hurdles, and javelin throw. However, later she turned to the combined events.

Emma Oosterwegel started her competitive career already in 2012, winning the gold at the local Amsterdam U18 Events in 60m and 60m hurdles. In the next season, she already turned to the combined events, competing at the Apeldoorn Dutch U18 Combined Events Championships in the heptathlon and Apeldoorn Dutch Combined Events U18 Indoor Championships in the pentathlon. Despite not winning an honor during the season in the combined events, she earned the gold at the Eindhoven Dutch U18 Championships in the javelin throw.

In 2014, Emma Oosterwegel won the gold at the Drachten Dutch Club Championships in 400m and at the Eindhoven Dutch Club Championships in 100m hurdles. She also won the silver at the Amsterdam Dutch U18 Championships in the javelin throw.

Emma Oosterwegel continue dominating the javelin throw discipline in 2015, winning the bronze at the Amsterdam Dutch Championships and the silver at the Breda Dutch U18 Championships. She also finished 4th at the Apeldoorn Dutch U18 Indoor Combined Events Championships in the pentathlon.

In 2016, Emma Oosterwegel competed at the Bydgoszcz IAAF World U20 Championships in the heptathlon, finishing 13th in the overall competition. She also won the gold medals at the Apeldoorn Dutch Junior Indoor Combined Events Championships in the pentathlon and the Amsterdam Dutch Championships in the javelin throw. She also competed at the Apeldoorn Dutch Indoor Championships in 60m hurdles, finishing 6th in the final.

Emma Oosterwegel made a fantastic 2017 season, winning the gold at the Apeldoorn Dutch U20 Indoor Combined Events Championships in the pentathlon. During the season, she also won the bronze medals at the Utrecht Dutch Championships, Amsterdam Dutch Club Championships, and the Leiden Gouden Spike in javelin throw and competed at the Grosseto European U20 Championships in the same discipline, remaining 8th. She also won the silver at the Apeldoorn Dutch U20/U18 Indoor Championships in 60m silver and the gold at the Amsterdam Dutch Club Championships in the high jump.

In 2018, Emma Oosterwegel proved to be one of the most complex athletes in the Netherlands and continues dominating local athletics. She won the gold at the Amersfoort Meeting and Amstelveen Pinkstermeerkamp in the heptathlon and competed at the prestigious Golden League’s Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting, finishing 9th. She also earned the gold at the Apeldoorn Dutch Indoor Combined Events Championships in the pentathlon.

In 2019, Emma Oosterwegel competed at the Gavle European U23 Championships, Hypo-meeting in Gotzis, and Doha IAAF World Championships in Athletics in heptathlon, but missed to win a medal. However, she won the gold at the Dutch Indoor Combined Events Championships in the pentathlon. During the season, she won the silver at the Den Haag Dutch Championships in the javelin throw.

In 2020, Emma Oosterwegel won another gold at the Dutch Indoor Combined Events Championships in the pentathlon. However, the short season hampered her from achieving more significant results in the other disciplines.

Emma Oosterwegel won her most prestigious honor in 2021, earning the bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in heptathlon. During the season she competed also at the Hypo-meeting in Gotzis in the same discipline, finishing 7th.

In 2022, Emma Oosterwegel won her first Golden League heptathlon gold at the Decastar Meeting in Talence, France. In the same discipline she also competed at the Munich European Athletics Championships, missing to reach the final, and the Eugene World Athletics Championships, finishing 7th.

Emma Oosterwegel continue to be one of the most prominent European and Dutch athletes in 2023. She won the bronze at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting in the heptathlon, as well as the bronze at the Dutch Indoor Championships in 60m hurdles.
