Marketa Vondrousova is a professional tennis player from the Czech Republic. She has a career-high singles WTA ranking of No 6 and is the 203 Wimbledon champion and the first unseeded woman to win the singles title. She was also the runner-up at the 2019 French Open and a silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Marketa Vondrousova was born on June 28, 1999, in Sokolov, Czech Republic. She was introduced to tennis at the age of four by her father. After being split into several sports, she began to focus on tennis, entering a national mini-tennis tournament on Stvanice island in Prague in 2006. As a junior Marketa Vondrousova is the former world’s number one. She won the titles at the Nike Junior Tour Masters, Passagespoirs, and Zentiva Cup in 2011, as well as Tk Milten and J4 Prague \ Moravia Steel Sparta Cup in 2012. In 2013, Marketa Vondrousova was the runner-up at the Junior Orange Bowl and European Junior Championships, while in 2014 reached the semi-finals of Junior Wimbledon and the Junior French Open / Roland Garros. She continued playing on the top level in 2015 and won the Slovak Junior Indoor U18 and J500 Milan \ Trofeo Bonfiglio, but also again reached the semifinals of the Junior French Open / Roland Garros.
Marketa Vondrousova made her professional debut in 2014, playing at the ITF Circuit. She reached the second round of the $10,000 Antalya (Turkey) and although being too young showed great skills on the court.
In 2015, Marketa Vondrousova won her first title, triumphing at the $10,000 Zielona Gora (Poland) and $15,000 Prerov (Czech Republic). During the season she also was the runner-up at the $10,000 W15 Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) and reached the semi-finals of the $25,000 Bratislava (Slovakia).
In 2016, Marketa Vondrousova won another title at the ITF Circuit, triumphing at the $10,000 Antalya (Turkey). She also made the WTA main draw debut at the WTA 250 Livesport Prague Open, but lost in the first round. Her season was interrupted in May after the Junior French Open / Roland Garros due to a left elbow injury.
Marketa Vondrousova started the 2017 season strongly, winning the titles at the $15,000 W15 Stuttgart-Stammheim (Germany) and $25,000 W25 Grenoble (France), but also being the runner-up at the $25,000 Perth (Australia) and $25,000 Clare (Australia). In April, Marketa Vondrousova won her first WTA title, triumphing at the WTA 250 Ladies Open Biel Bienne and during the summer won the $100,000 W100 Trnava (Slovakia) and $80,000 Prague (Czech Republic) tournaments. She made her senior Grand Slam debut at the French Open / Roland Garros, reaching the second round. Thus, she entered the Top 100 of the WTA ranking.
In 2018, Marketa Vondrousova reached the fourth rounds of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and the US Open, as well as the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Ladies Championship Gstaad by iXion Services. Although leaving for a while Top 100, returned back and finished the season as the world’s no 68.
In 2019, Marketa Vondrousova made her first breakthrough at the senior level, being the runner-up at the French Open / Roland Garros, losing the final to Ashleigh Barty (Australia). Meanwhile, during the season she was the runner-up at the WTA 250 Hungarian Ladies Open and WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup, reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, WTA 1000 Miami Open, and WTA 1000 Rome Open. Her season ended in September due to a treatment of left wrist injury. However, she skyrocketed in the WTA ranking to No 14 and finished the season as the world’s No 16.
Marketa Vondrousova started the 2020 season slowly. She reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Adelaide International and in September played in the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Rome Open. However, during the other tournaments in the season she did not perform on top level.
In 2021, Marketa Vondrousova again reached her top form. She reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Yarra Valley Classic and the fourth round of the Australian Open. At the French Open / Roland Garros, she reached again the fourth round, while at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics played in the final to earn the silver medal for her and her country. At the end of the season, Marketa Vondrousova reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open, WTA 500 Chicago Fall Tennis Classic, and WTA 500 VTB Kremlin Cup.
Marketa Vondrousova was followed by injuries in 2022, which seriously affected her form and performance again She started the season by reaching the third round of the Australian Open and the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, as well as the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. However, missed most of the next tournaments and returned to the court only in October to play in the ITF Circuit and return again to form. She won the $100,000 W100 Shrewsbury (Great Britain) and reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 Open P2i Angers Arena Loire.
In 2023, Marketa Vondrousova had her most successful season so far. She started by reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Adelaide International, the third round of the Australian Open, and the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Upper Austria Ladies Linz. Marketa Vondrousova played in the Round of 16, at the Masters’ tournaments WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, WTA 1000 Miami Open, and WTA 1000 Rome Open, before winning her most prestigious title so far – Grand Slam’s Wimbledon. By the end of the season, she played in the quarter-finals of the US Open and the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. She was part of the Top 8 players to take part at the WTA Finals but lost all her three matches. Thus, she reached a career-best ranking of the world’s No 6 and ended the season as the world’s No 7.
In 2024, Marketa Vondrousova continued being in top form, although started hesitantly the season by losing in the first round of the Australian Open and the second round of the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open. She reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. At the French Open / Roland Garros, she reached the quarter-finals, losing to the world’s number one and top-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland).
