Chinese tennis babe Qinwen Zheng

Zheng Qinwen

Zheng Qinwen is a Chinese professional tennis player, who has a career-high singles ranking of world No 7 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), achieved on January 29, 2024. She has won two WTA Tour and one WTA Challenger title, as well as eight ITF singles trophies, and was named the 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year. She is the runner-up at the 2024 Australian Open.

Zheng Qinwen was born on October 8, 2002, in Shiyan, Hubei, China. She started in tennis at a young age and showed great skills. During her youth career, Zheng Qinwen won the titles at the 2015 Audi GW :plus Zentrum Munchen Junior Open, 2015 Portimao International Tournament U14, 2015 Vilamoura International U14, 2015 Kystmesterskaberne, 2016 Melaka ITF JR Championship, 2016 Open des jeunes Stade Français – BNP PARIBAS Cup, 2016 Pont Des Generations, 2017 J200 Chuncheon \ Lee Duk Hee Cup Chuncheon International Junior Tennis Championships, 2018 J300 Nonthaburi \ LTAT ITF Junior Tournament, 2018 J300 Santa Croce Sull’Arno \ International Junior Tournament “Citta’ Di Santa Croce” and many more. She was also the runner-up at the Junior Orange Bowl in 2016 and played in the semi-finals of the Junior US Open and Junior French Open / Roland Garros in 2019.

Zheng Qinwen started her professional career in 2018, debuting at the W15 Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt), where reached the second round. By the end of the season, she reached the quarter-finals of $15,000 Nanjing (China) and also played at the $60,000 W60 Jinan (China), $25,000 W25 Guiyang (China), $60,000 W60 Liuzhou (China).

In 2019, Zheng Qinwen continued playing in the Junior Tour and the ITF Circuit, playing at the $15,000 W15 Arcadia, CA (USA), $25,000 W35 Santa Margherita Di Pula (Italy), and $25,000 W35 Rome (Italy), but lost in the first rounds. However, during the summer, she reached the quarter-finals of the $25,000 W25 Madrid (Spain) and the semi-finals of the $15,000 W15 Madrid (Spain).

In 2020, Zheng Qinwen won her first ITF title, triumphing at the $15,000 W15 Cordenons (Italy), and a few days later won two more trophies at the $25,000 W25 Marbella (Spain) and $25,000 W25 Frydek Mistek (Czech Republic). At the end of the season, she won her fourth title at the $25,000 W25 Selva Gardena (Italy).

Zheng Qinwen made her WTA main-scheme debut in 2021, playing at the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open, where reached the second round. Meanwhile, during the season she won the titles at the $25,000 W25 Hamburg (Germany), $60,000 W60 Stare Splavy (Czech Republic), and $25,000 W25 Funchal (Portugal), but also played in the semi-finals of the $100,000 W100 Contrexeville (France). Following her good performance, she entered the world’s Top 150 for the first time and ended the season as the world’s No 126.

In 2022, Zheng Qinwen started the season by reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Melbourne Summer Set I and the second round of the Australian Open. She won the title at the $60,000 W60 Orlando, FL (USA) and reached the second rounds of the WTA 250 Abierto GNP Seguros, WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, and WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open, before making her breakthrough at the French Open / Roland Garros, where reached the Round of 16. Zheng Qinwen continued with her great performance and won her first and only Challenger title, triumphing at the WTA 125 BBVA Open Internacional de Valencia. She reached the third round of Wimbledon and US Open, as well as the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open (Rogers Cup). At the end of the season, she played her first WTA final at the WTA 500 Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis but lost to Liudmila Samsonova (Russia). After such an impressive season, the young Chinese tennis player entered the world’s Top 50 and ended the season as the world’s No 28.

Zheng Qinwen continued with her great gameplay and in 2023 proved to be the top Chinese tennis player in the world. She won her first WTA title at the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open and three months later won her second WTA title at the WTA 500 Bank of Communications Zhengzhou Open. Meanwhile, during the season, she reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and WTA 1000 Rome Open, as well as the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open. She finished the season as the world’s No 15 and qualified to play at the Huafa Technology WTA Elite Trophy year-end championships, where finished as a runner-up, losing in the final to Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil).

In 2024, Zheng Qinwen made an even more impressive start of the season, playing in the final at the Australian Open, losing in straight sets to Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus). She continued playing perfectly, reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, but after that lost in the first round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open. However, after her success at the Grand Slam, she reached her career-high singles ranking of world No 7 in the WTA.
