Eugenie “Genie” Bouchard is a Canadian tennis player. She is the runner-up at the 2014 Wimbledon Tennis Championships and also reached the semifinals of the 2014 Australian Open and 2014 French Open. Eugenie Bouchard reached a career-high ranking of No 5, becoming the first Canadian tennis player to be ranked in the top 5 in the singles format.
Eugenie Bouchard was born on February 25, 1994, in Montreal, Québec, Canada. She started playing tennis at the age of five and was a member of Tennis Canada’s National Training Centre in Montreal. Her first major award was the Girls’2007 Prince Cup in Miami, FL. Eugenie Bouchard also won 2008 Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships, 2008 J3 Burlington \ All Canadian ITF Junior Championships, 2008 J3 San Jose \ Costa Rica Bowl, 2009 Pan American ITF Championship presented by the Tulsa Sports Commission USA Flag, 2010 Uruguay Bowl, 2011 Canadian Open Junior Championships, and of course the most significant success was the title of the Juniour Wimbledon in 2012.
Eugenie Bouchard made her professional debut already in 2008 at the $10,000 Sumter, SC (USA) losing in the first round. during the season she played also at the $25,000 Waterloo (Canada), $10,000 Southlake, TX (USA), and $50,000 Saguenay (Canada), but in all lost in the first round.
In 2009, Eugenie Bouchard continue playing in the ITF and Junior circuits. In the ITF tour she took part in the $10,000 Caserta (Italy), reaching the second round, as well as $10,000 Tortosa (Spain) and $10,000 W15 Amarante (Portugal), reaching also the second round.
Eugenie Bouchard reached her first semi-finals of the ITF tour in 2010 at the $25,000 Waterloo (Canada). During the season she reached the quarter-finals of the $25,000 W25 Osprey, FL (USA).
Eugenie Bouchard won her first ITF trophy in 2011 at the $25,000 Burnie (Australia). During the season she won another ITF title at the $10,000 Sibenik (Croatia), but more important is that she debuted on the WTA Tour. Eugenie Bouchard played at the WTA 250 Citi Open in Washington, reaching the second round. Later during the season she also won a wildcard for the WTA 1000 Canadian Open and WTA 250 Coupe Banque Nationale présentée par Mazda but lost in the first round.
In 2012, Eugenie Bouchard won three ITF titles at the $10,000 Bastad (Sweden), $25,000 Granby (Canada), and $60,000 W60 Toronto (Canada). She also played at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open, reaching the second round. Eugenie Bouchard also was in the main draw of the WTA 250 Citi Open, WTA 250 Texas Tennis Open, and WTA 250 Coupe Banque Nationale présentée par Mazda.
Eugenie Bouchard turned mainly to the WTA tour in 2013, reaching her first final at the WTA 250 HP Open in Osaka, but lost to Samantha Stosur. during the season she made a great breakthrough at the WTA 1000 Toray Pan Pacific Open and WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open, reaching the quarter-finals, as well as WTA 250 Coupe Banque Nationale présentée par Mazda and WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg, reaching the semi-finals. She also played in the Grand Slam, reaching the third round of Wimbledon.
In 2014, Eugenie Bouchard won her first WTA title at the WTA 250 Nurnberger Versicherungs. However, she made a fantastic performance in the Grand Slam, reaching the finals of Wimbledon and the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the French Open / Roland Garros. She also reached the final of the WTA 1000 Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open. This was her most successful season and climbed from WTA No 31 to No 7 at the end of the season. Thus, she played also in the WTA Year End Championships but registered three losses.
In 2015, Eugenie Bouchard started very strong, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, but however, after this her season was terrible. She reached the third round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and the fourth rd round of the US Open. Thus, her WTA ranking dropped to No 49 at the end o the season.
Eugenie Bouchard continues losing pace in her gameplay and results in 2016. She was runner-up at the WTA 250 Hobart International and WTA 250 BMW Malaysian Open, but failed to cross the third round in any of the major events.
In 2017, Eugenie Bouchard reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Sydney International and the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open. Her ranking continue to collapse and she fell to world’s number 83 at the end of the season.
In the next two season year, her biggest achievements were the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Ladies Championship Gstaad by iXion Services and WTA 250 BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open in 2018, as well as the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 ASB Classic in 2019.
In 2020 and 2021, Eugenie Bouchard was the runner-up of the WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul and WTA 250 Abierto Akron Zapopan, and also reached the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros.
