Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez won her first WTA title at Monterrey Open, after beating in the final the Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic by 2-0 (6:1; 6:4).
“I didn’t think it was a final or anything. I just tried to think of it as another match”, said Leylah Fernandez after claiming the WTA 250 event.
She needed 89 minutes to defeat Viktorija Golubic in a match that featured two players who hadn’t lost a set all tournament long.
The Canadian started the first set after winning 5 consecutive games and took advantage of 5:0. After exchanging a game, Leylah Fernandez closed the set with a result of 6:1.
The second set started more equal with both winning their service games and then exchanging a break. The result was moving with exchanging games to 4:4. The ninth game was the longest in the match and carried the much-needed break for Leylah Fernandez, which helped to win the set with 6:4 and the match.
This is the first WTA title for Leylah Fernandez, who is only 18 years old.
