Canadian gymnast Ellie Black withdrew from the women’s all-around final at the Tokyo Olympics

Canadian gymnast Ellie Black withdrew from the women’s all-around final at the Tokyo Olympics due to an ankle injury sustained during training, announced the country’s Olympic Committee.

The 25-year-old Ellie Black finished fifth in the 2016 All-Around Olympics in Rio de Janeiro before winning silver at the 2017 World Championships in Montreal.

‘We have the unfortunate news of sharing that Ellie sprained her ankle during Tuesday’s training session and has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the all-around event”, said COC Chief Sport Officer Eric Myles in a statement “We are hoping that she is still able to compete in the beam final on August 3”, added he.

The International Gymnastics Federation has said that Ellie Black will be replaced in the finals by Dutch gymnast Lieke Wevers.

With Ellie Black out, Brooklyn Moors of Cambridge, Ontario, will be the only Canadian competing in the all-around final.
