Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu is a British professional tennis player. She reached a career-high ranking of No 10 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on July 11, 2022, and is the current British No 1. She won the Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open.

Emma Raducanu was born on November 13, 2002, in Toronto and raised in London. She was introduced to tennis at the age of five. She showed her great skills quickly and only 12 years old won her first junior title at Braga Open (Portugal) in 2014 and a year later won InTime Tennis Direct Junior Open. She made her International Tennis Federation (ITF) debut in London at the Nike Junior International (Grade-5 event) after having entered on her 13th birthday, the earliest allowed age of entry. Emma Raducanu won the London and later the Liverpool tournaments, proving her skills and bright tennis future. In 2016, she won also the Wilson Cup (Czech Republic) and reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl and the quarter-finals of the European Junior Championships, as well as finishing as runner-up at the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships.

Emma Raducanu made her professional debut in 2018 at the ITF Circle tournament $15,000 Nanjing (China). She reached the quarter-finals of the tournament despite her young age. A month later, Emma Raducanu won her first ITF title at the $15,000 Tiberias (Israel). By the end of the season, she won another title at the $15,000 W15 Antalya (Turkey). Meanwhile, she played on the junior tour and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open Junior and Wimbledon Junior.

In 2019, the British tennis played continue gaining experience at the ITF tour and the Junior tour. She won the title at the $25,000 W25 Pune (India), was the runner-up at the $15,000 W15 Tel Aviv (Israel), and reached the semi-finals of the $25,000 W25 Bolton (UK), $25,000 W25 Roehampton (UK).

Emma Raducanu made her biggest breakthrough in 2021 when she debuted on the WTA tour at the WTA 250 Rothesay Open Nottingham. However, she lost to her compatriot Harriet Dart in the first round. She debuted also at the Grand Slam tournaments, having a great performance at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round. In August 2021, she reached her first major final at the WTA 125 Oracle Challenger Series in Chicago but lost to Clara Tauson (Denmark). However, the biggest success came later in the season, when Emma Raducanu won the US Open tennis tournament starting from the qualifications. Thus, Emma Raducanu entered into the world’s Top 20, starting the season as the world’s No 345.

In 2022, Emma Raducanu was considered already the top competitor for every tournament. She reached the second round of the Australian Open and quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. Emma Raducanu reached the third round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open and WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. At the end of the season, she played in the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Hana Bank Korea Open.

Emma Raducanu continue playing at a high level in 2023. She reached the fourth round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open.
