Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha won the Olympic title in the 10km open waters swimming marathon

Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha won the Olympic title in the 10km swimming marathon in the open waters of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The world runner-up from Barcelona 2013, Ana Marcela Cunha, triumphed in the extremely contested race with a time of 1:59:30.8 hours.

Thus, she took first prize in her third Olympics after a fifth place in Beijing 2008 and tenth in her hometown of Rio de Janeiro five years ago.

The 29-year-old South American was only 9 tenths of a second ahead of defending champion Sharon van Rouwendaal from the Netherlands.

Kareena Lee from Australia was third in 1.7 seconds.

Hungarian Anna Greta Olasz was fourth, while German Leonie Beck was fifth.
