Aryna Sabalenka won the title of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open after defeating the top-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland) by 2-1 (6:3, 3:6, 6:3) in 2:27 hours. Thus, the Belarusian tennis player wins the trophy for the second time in her career after triumphing in 2021.
Aryna Sabalenka started the match hesitantly, having some doubts about winning her first serving game, but in the end, closed it in her favor. Iga Swiatek equalized with a game on 15. Both players exchanged fast games, until the 6th game, when Aryna Sabalenka received two break points in her favor, which, however, the Polish player saved and equalized to 3:3. The Belarusian player won her next service game on 15, and in the 8th game at serve of Iga Swiatek received another two break point, which this time succeeded to materialize and took a lead of 5:3. Thus, Aryna Sabalenka served for the set and without any problems closed it.
The second set started strongly for the world’s number one Iga Swiatek, who broke the serve of her opponent already in the beginning and took a lead of 3:0. However, Aryna Sabalenka succeeded to equalize to 3:3 and even received two break points to make another break, but the Polish player saved them. Iga Swiatek stabilized her play and broke her Belarusian opponent again and closed the set at 6:3, thus equalizing the score.
The third decisive set started with an early break for Aryna Sabalenka, who led by 3:0. However, Iga Swiatek equalized to 3:3 returning the break, but Aryna Sabalenka made another break in the 8th game to take a lead of 5:3 and serving for the match. The last game of the match was one of the most interesting and nothing came easy. First, Iga Swiatek had a breakpoint, but Aryna Sabalenka saved it. Then, needed 4 match points to succeed to close the set and win the trophy.
Thus, Aryna Sabalenka is the new queen of Madrid, winning the title at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open for the second time in her career.
This was 5th WTA final for the world’s No 2 Aryna Sabalenka this season, who already won the titles at the Australian Open and the WTA 500 Adelaide International, and was the runner-up at the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where lost exactly to Iga Swiatek on the final.
