The Ukrainian player Anhelina Kalinina qualified for the second round of the prestigious tennis tournament WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open. She won her opening match for the tournament versus French player Clara Burel with 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) in 75 minutes.
Anhelina Kalinina was better on the court and despite her serve problems she showed confidence and experience to defeat her young opponent. The Ukrainian made 3 double faults, had only 53% of successful first serve and won only 58% of the points of the first serve. However, she was better in the play and succeeded to get the match.
The first set started perfectly for Anhelina Kalinina who registered two breaks at the start of the seat and took a lead with 4:0. However, her opponent, won three consecutive games to reduce the advantage of the Ukrainian, who finally won by 6:3.
The second set started quite more equal for both players. They won their serve games, but the resistance of Clara Burel was only until 3:2 when Anhelina Kalinina broke her serve and won the next two games to close the set with 6:2.
In the second round, Anhelina Kalinina will face the third-seeded Polish player Iga Swiatek.
Another Ukrainian, Dayana Yastremska, who received a “wild card” for the tournament, lost in the first round to French player Caroline Garcia with 1-2 (4:6, 7:6, 5:7). In the second round, Caroline Garcia will face the British talent and 11th-seeded Emma Raducanu.
