Madison Keys is an American professional tennis player. She has been ranked as high as world No 7 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), a ranking she first achieved in October 2016. Madison Keys has played in one Grand Slam tournament final at the 2017 US Open, competed at the 2016 WTA Finals, and was a semifinalist at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Madison Keys was born on February 17, 1995, in Rock Island, Illinois, United States. Her passion for tennis started at a young age. She started playing tennis at the Quad-City Tennis Club in Moline. She began taking lessons regularly at seven and began competing in tournaments at the age of nine. As a junior Madison Keys won the 2007 Junior Orange Bowl, the 2007 Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships, the Gator Bowl, and the 2010 Pan American ITF Championship.
Madison Keys made her professional debut in 2009 at the $25,000 Fort Walton Beach, FL (USA). She lost in the first round but started gaining experience at the big championships The same season she debuted also at the WTA Tour, playing at the WTA 250 MPS Group Championships, reaching the second round.
In 2010, Madison Keys won her first trophy, triumphing at the $10,000 Cleveland, OH (USA). During the season, she reached the semi-finals of the $10,000 Atlanta, GA (USA), $10,000 W25 Evansville, IN (USA), and $10,000 Amelia Island, FL (USA). She also was the runner-up at the $25,000 Bayamon (Puerto Rico).
Madison Keys was awarded a wild card into the WTA 1000 Miami Open in 2011. However, the young tennis talent lost in the first round of the tournament to Patty Schnyder (Switzerland). Later the same season, she debuted that the Grand Slam’s US Open, where reached the second round. By the end of the season, she reached the semi-finals of the $75,000 Phoenix, AZ (USA).
In 2012, Madison Keys debuted at the Australian Open but lost in the first round. The later same season, she reached the second round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open and won two ITF titles -$50,000 W60 Saguenay (Canada) and $75,000 Phoenix, AZ (USA).
Madison Keys gained some self-confidence after continue improving her gameplay and her skills. In 2013 she reached the third round of the WTA 500 Sydney International and later the same month at the Australian Open. She continue the season reaching the second rounds of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and WTA 1000 Miami Open, and WTA 1000 Madrid Open, as well as the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. Madison keys reached the third round of the Wimbledon and WTA 1000 Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis. At the end of the season, she reached the semi-finals of the HP Open in Osaka, Japan. After the great success, she ended in the Top 100 and finished the season as the world’s No 38.
In 2014, Madison Keys won her first WTA title at the WTA 500 Rothesay International Eastbourne. During the same season, she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Sydney International and the WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg.
Madison Keys made a great breakthrough in 2015, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open. She continues the season with perfect performance being the runner-up at the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open and later reaching the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon and the fourth round of the US Open. She finished the season as the world’s No 18.
The season of 2016 was maybe the most successful for Madison Keys. She reached the fourth rounds of all four Grand Slam tournaments – Australian Open, the French Open / Roland Garros, the Wimbledon, and the US Open. Also won the title at the WTA 500 Rothesay Classic Birmingham, was the runner-up at the WTA 1000 Rome Open and the WTA 1000 Rogers Cup, and reached the semi-finals of the Rio 2016 Olympics. Madison Keys also reached the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open and the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Miami Open. At the end of the season, she was in the women’s Top 10 and played at the WTA Finals in Singapore, losing in the groups.
Madison Keys missed the beginning of the 2017 season due to surgery to repair her injured left wrist, which she hurt over a year earlier. She returned to the court only in March to play at the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and WTA 1000 Miami Open, reaching the 3rd and 2nd rounds, respectively. She needed some time to again get in form and in July won another WTA trophy at the WTA 500 Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. However, in August, Madison Keys made another fantastic performance at the US Open, reaching the final, but lost to Sloane Stephens.
In 2018, Madison Keys had another great result at the Grand Slam tournaments – quarter-final of the Australian Open, as well as semi-finals of the French Open / Roland Garros and US Open. The same season she also reached the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open.
Madison Keys won her most prestigious trophy so far in 2019 – the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. During the season she also won the title at the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open and reached the quarter-finals of the French Open / Roland Garros. For a while during the season, she returned again in the women’s Top 10 but finished the year as the world’s No 13.
In 2020, Madison Keys played only a few tournaments due to the coronavirus pandemic and her biggest success during the season was the runner-up at the WTA 500 Brisbane International. She reached also the third rounds of the Australian Open and the US Open.
Madison Keys had quite an unsuccessful season in 2021, with her biggest success reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon.
However, in 2022, she again returned to the desired form and had great results. She won the titles of the WTA 250 Adelaide International 2, as well as reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. She also reached the fourth round of the French Open / Roland Garros and the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open.
Madison Keys is one of the top female tennis players. Definitely, we can expect a lot more titles from her.
