Sorana Cirstea is a Romanian professional tennis player. In singles, she achieved a career-high ranking of world No 21 in August 2013. Her biggest achievements include reaching the quarterfinals at the 2009 French Open and the final at the 2013 Rogers Cup.
Sorana Mihaela Cirstea was born on April 7, 1990, in Bucharest, Romania. She was introduced to tennis at the age of four by her mother. She is a former ITF Junior Circuit top-ten player, reaching the highest combined ranking of No 6 in 2006. Her best results include a title in the 2005 German Junior Open (Grade 1), as well as runner-up at the 2006 Yucatan World Cup and 2006 Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships.
Sorana Cirstea turned professional in 2006. She debuted at the WTA 250 Swedish Open Women, losing in the first round. During the season, she reached the semi-final of the ITF Circuit tournament $25,000 W25 Istanbul (Turkey), and the quarter-final of the $25,000 W25 Madrid (Spain).
In 2007, Sorana Cirstea made her first WTA breakthrough, reaching the final of the WTA 250 Budapest Grand Prix, but losing to Gisela Dulko missed the chance to win her first trophy. Later during the season, she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali, Indonesia. She played at several WTA tournaments as well but also won her first ITF title at the $25,000 W25 Bucharest (Romania).
Sorana Cirstea debuted in the Grand Slam tournaments in 2008, when she reached the main scheme of the Australian Open. Despite losing in the first round, she continue improving her gameplay and gained confidence. During the season, Sorana Cirstea won her first WTA title at the WTA 250 Tashkent Open. She also reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Fortis Championships, the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Schick, WTA 250 Abierto Mexicano TELCEL Presentado Por HSBC and WTA 250 Libema Open, the second round of the French Open / Roland Garros and the US Open, played at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and was the runner-up at the $50,000 Bucharest (Romania), $100,000 Cuneo (Italy), $100,000 Athens (Greece). Following this strong season, Sorana Cirstea finished the year as WTA No 36.
In 2009, the Romanian tennis player made a breakthrough in the higher-rated WTA tournaments. She reached the quarter-finals of the French Open / Roland Garros, as well as the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 East West Bank Classic presented by Herbalife. Sorana Cirstea played also in the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Andalucia Tennis Experience, quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Estoril Open, as well as the third rounds of Wimbledon and WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. For a short time she entered the world’s Top 25, but at the end of the season fell to WTA No 45.
However, after the successful end of the 2009 season, her gameplay was ruined at the beginning of the 2010 season as well. She hardly overcame the first round of the tournaments and only reached the second rounds of the Australian Open, WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, and WTA 1000 Miami Open. In 2011, Sorana Cirstea returned to play in both WTA Tour and ITF Circuit. She won the title at the $100,000 Cagnes-Sur-Mer (France) and reached the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros. By the end of the season, she won the trophies at $100,000+H Saint-Malo (France) and $50,000 Limoges (France) but did not record significant WTA achievements. After dropping out for a while of the WTA Top 100, at the end of the season she was the world’s No 60.
In 2012, Sorana Cirstea started the season confidently. She reached the third round of the Australian Open, the semi-finals of the WTA 250 PTT Pattaya Open and WTA 250 Barcelona Ladies Open, as well as the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Hobart International and the third round of the WTA 1000 Rome Open. During the summer, she played in the third round of Wimbledon, as well as the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, USA. By the end of the season, her biggest success was the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Guangzhou Open. However, her constant good results climbed her ranking to the world’s No 27.
Sorana Cirstea made her best season so far in 2013. She was the runner-up at the WTA 1000 Rogers Cup, reached the third rounds of the Australian Open and the French Open / Roland Garros, the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Bank of the West Classic and WTA 250 PTT Pattaya Open, as well as third rounds of the WTA 1000 Miami Open and WTA 1000 Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis. During the season she climbed to the career-highest WTA ranking of the world’s No 21 and finished the season as the world’s No 22.
In 2014, Sorana Cirstea did not perform at the top level and failed to keep her impetus. During the season she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 PTT Pattaya Open, WTA 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, and WTA 250 Tianjin Open, as well as the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros. She dropped out of the Top 100 for a while, but finally ended the season as the world’s No 94.
Sorana Cirstea had her most terrible season in 2015 when she failed to record any significant success due to various injuries. Her biggest achievement during the season was the quarter-finals of the $100,000 W100 Contrexeville (France).
In 2016, Sorana Cirstea returned to play in ITF Circuit together with the WTA Tour. She made a Brazilian tour to win the titles at the $25,000 Bertioga (Brazil) and the runner-up at the $25,000 Guaruja, before the WTA 250 Rio Open presented by Claro, where reached the semi-finals. In May, she made a fantastic performance at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, reaching the quarter-finals, while in June reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Mallorca Open. By the end of the season, Sorana Cirstea did not record any success in the WTA Tour but reached the semi-finals of the $100,000 Biarritz (France) and $50,000 W60 Versmold (Germany).
Sorana Cirstea made a fantastic start to the 2017 season. She reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and then the third round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open. In May, she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Miami Open and the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Nurnberger Versicherungs. She also made a fantastic quarter-final run at the WTA 1000 China Open. In the Grand Slam tournaments, she reached the third round at Wimbledon and the second rounds at the French Open / Roland Garros and the US Open. After the good season, she returned to the Top 40 and finished the season as the world’s No 37.
The season 2018 was again unsuccessful for the Romanian tennis player. She reached the third round of the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open and quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Nurnberger Versicherungs and WTA 250 BRD Bucharest Open.
In 2019, Sorana Cirstea started the season in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Shenzhen Open and WTA 250 Hungarian Ladies Open. She reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Nurnberger Versicherungs and the third round of the US Open. In September, she reached the final of the WTA 250 Tashkent Open but lost to Alison Van Uytvanck (Belgium). Her last tournament for the year was WTA 250 Open BLS De Limoges, reaching the quarter-finals.
In 2020, Sorana Cirstea won the title of the $100,000 W100+H Dubai (UAE) and reached the third round of the US Open and the second round of the Australian Open. The season was short due to coronavirus pandemic.
Sorana Cirstea won her second WTA title in 2021. She triphed at the WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul and in the next month was the runner-up at the WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg. She reached the fourth round of the French Open / Roland Garros and the third round of Wimbledon and Australian Open. During the season, her other achievements are the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Grampians Trophy and WTA 250 WTA Zavarovalnica Sava Portoroz She finished the season as world’s No 39.
In 2022, Sorana Cirstea started strongly, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. Later, she reached the semifinals of the WTA 250 Open 6ème Sens – Métropole de Lyon, WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul, and WTA 250 Rothesay Classic Birmingham, as well as the third round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open.
Sorana Cirstea is making a fantastic performance at the 2023 WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, reaching the quarter-finals so far.
