Jessica Pegula Canadian Open

The American tennis player Jessica Pegula successfully started the defense of her title at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open, which is being held in Toronto. The tournament every year changes its location between Montreal and Toronto.

In the first match of the second round of the program, Jessica Pegula, who is 3rd-seeded, won by 2-0 (7:5, 6:4) over the former leader in the ranking Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic). The match started badly for Jessica Pegula, who allowed a 0:2 deficit, but the American quickly recovered and took a 4:2 lead.

Another break followed for Karolina Pliskova and equalization at 4:4, but the American tennis player managed to get out of the first set of the match with her third break in it for 6:5.

The second set also started with an exchange of breaks, but after Jessica Pegula won her rival’s serve for 2:1, there were no more breaks until the end of the match, and the American deservedly went on to the next round.

In the most curious match of the first round, the winner of four Grand Slam titles Naomi Osaka (Japan) won by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) her match versus the 9th-seeded Ons Jabeur (Tunisia). The Tunisian did not look like herself, made many mistakes and fell behind throughout the match, which led to a quick outcome in favor of Naomi Osaka.

In the second round, the Japanese player will face Elise Mertens (Belgium), who defeated Katie Volynets (USA) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1).

Paula Badosa (Spain) continues to the second round, who eliminated Clara Tauson (Canada) after 2-0 (6:1, 6:4).

Paula Badosa’s next opponent is 4th-seeded Jeļena Ostapenko (Latvia), who starts from the second round.
